Ideas for sell-lines on my magazine cover

The mode of address is informal and comes across as friendly particularly the sell-line in the bottom right corner of the magazine. This reads 'BLOODY HELL
Harry comes out fighting'- which will appeal to the predominantly male target audiences humour. The tone in the rest of the cover is strong and influential towards the audience, informing them that they need to buy the magazine and learn the '45 new movies you need to know about right now'. The rest of the sell-lines are names/titles of movies that simply appear on the most important left hand third of the magazine. This allows the target audience to scan the magazine cover quickly and their attention will hopefully be captured by a movie they love- and therefore lead them to buy the magazine.

This magazine covers main sell-line reads ''Oscar Night Preview. Will 'Lord of the rings' rule?''. The golden colouring of the text 'Oscar night preview' reflects the presigious awards ceremony that celebrates the best movies and the trophey/statue that the actors and directors recieve as acknowledgment. This idea is anchored by the image of the famous 'Oscar' trophey/statue which is a gold colour. The 'Oscars' being such a large event is reflected in the cover of the magazine- as this is the only sell-line apart from the sell-line refering to 'Lord of the Rings'. The cover is simple and not over cluttered but includes images at the top of the magazine which appeal more to the male audience. I am to have a good balance of sell-lines and images in my magazine cover.

This magazine has employed an unsual convention by placing the sell-lines on the right hand side of the magazine. This edition is likely to make it stand out among the other covers, which should mean that the edition will sell well. The main movie featured in this cover is 'Captain America', the largest text on the cover apart from the masthead is the sell-line: 'Captain America' which allows the audience to immediately recognise the movie featuring on the cover. The image also helps anchor the name of the movie as it shows the main actor armed and ready for action. The sell line above 'Captain America' reads 'exclusive first look!' which entices the audience to want to find out more as they believe that no one else will have this knowledge and they will be the first to find out.

My aim for my magazine cover to is include images and sell-lines as it will attract a range of audiences rather than predominantly male or female. My main sell-line will probably be similar to the Entertainment editions as they tend to focus on one main movie and anchor the name by including the name of the movie in the sell-line. I will have less sell-lines than in the music magazine project, as it looked to messy and disorganised. I hope to have sell-lines that focus on different aspects such as behind the scenes, interviews with actors etc.

Choosing a name for my horror movie

I found it difficult to come up with a narrative that I liked and that my target audience would like to watch as well. Therefore when it came to choosing a name I presented a few names of what the movie could be called and words associated with the word 'dream'.

It was conclusive that 'Sweet Nightmare' was the most popular so I decided to name my horror movie 'Sweet Nightmare' as my target audience also thought it was appropriate. With regards to the word 'dream' most people associate it with 'good night, sweet dreams' or 'bad dream', i wanted to incorporate the two meanings behind the word to intrigue the audience and play with their minds before they had watched the trailer or the movie.

Inspiration for the Poster and Magazine cover

While browsing the internet I came across this 'moving image'. I had been experimenting a little with my Poster and Magazine cover and this image allowed me to realise that I wanted an abstract image with a blue/green tone to it. The 'moving image' is almost hypnotic as it expands and appears to being coming towards you or out of the computer screen, which is frightening and confusing for most people. I wanted my Poster and Magazine to have the same look, however I could not use moving media for these so decided that heavily editing them may have a similar effect.

Costume

Both of my main characters will be wearing grey tops  in the beginning of the trailer. I hope this will reflect the simple and calm tone at the start of my movie. The plain grey hoodie is what the 'Kathryn' will wear. This is to show her 'plain personality' and present her as a non threatening character. The character 'Lizzy' (Kathryn's friend) also has a similar personality and is not a threatening character. Having a cartoon character on the front of her shirt will hopefully show that she is more childish than and definitely much more innocent than Kathryn is.

The other costume that is significant, is the black t-shirt and light blue silk pyjamas. The black t-shirt is representative of Kathryn's dark or evil side- as the colour black is linked to 'evilness'. The light blue pyjama top will have the opposite effect and show that the character 'Lizzy' is still innocent and unaware of 'Kathryn's' transformation. The light blue  colour is connected to the idea of a young child who is innocent and oblivious to evil. The contrasting colours and images on the clothing found within the trailer, are there to provide the audience with commonly used conventions in horror movies, which will allow them to recognise the 'villain' and 'victim'.

Basic Camera Tutorial- Online help

I had very little knowledge about filming or the functions on a video camera prior to this protect. I had no idea how to charge the camera or how to transfer raw footage from the camera to a computer. Luckily I had access to the internet, and picked up a few tips from a student- who was filming me as well as my teachers to guide me in uploading raw footage. Below are some examples of the online video's that I recieved extra information.

In this second video I found out more than I needed to know really but I found it all useful. I did not even consider the vast range of tripods that I couldv'e used. As this was a school project the budget was limited so I did not expect the camera or tripod to be as good quality as they were. The first six minutes of the video below helped me with setting up of the tripod, however the second half also gave me some ideas and provided me with the knowledge of how to better angle the camera and tripod.

Masthead ideas for my film magazine

I thought I was quite creative in coming up with the name 'obsessed' for the music magazine project, but was uncertain if or how I could be original with a name for a movie magazine.
The more popular and successful movie magazines already existing include: Empire, Total Film and Entertainment.

I wanted my movie magazine's name to reflect a love of film and everything associated with movies, including behind the scenes. I asked a few target audience members what they think should be included in my name for my movie and the replies were:

  • Film Lover
  • Obsessed with movies
  • Screen
  • Watch

I did not find any of these replies particularly helpful and came up with 'FILM FANATIC'. It later occurred to me that I had unintentionaly been influenced by a cinema called 'odeon' their 'tagline' is 'fanatic about film'. I think that this has a good link as many people will be familiar with the 'fanatic about film' saying and can will realise that the magazine is aimed at film fanatics- who cant always go to the cinema, or and want to find out more about the movie.
